(1) Кто подобен мудрецу, и кто разумеет значение вещей? Мудрость человека просветляет лик его и смягчает суровость лица его. (2) Я (советую): повеление царское соблюдай, как и слово клятвы Б-жьей. (3) Не торопись уходить от лица его, не присутствуй при злом деле, потому что все, что он захочет, свершится. (4) Где слово царское, там власть, и кто ему скажет: "что ты делаешь?" (5) Соблюдающий заповедь злого дела не познает, а сердце мудрого знает время и закон. (6) Ибо у всякого дела – время и закон, ибо зло человека тяготеет над ним. (7) Ибо не знает он, что еще будет, а когда это будет – кто ему скажет? (8) Нет человека властного над ветром, чтобы удержать ветер, и нет власти над днем смерти, и нет отпуска на войне, и не спасет нечестие нечестивца. (9) Все это видал я, принимая к сердцу своему все дела, что делаются под солнцем, когда человек властвует над человеком, во вред ему. (10) Видел я также нечестивцев, которых похоронили, и приходили и уходили от святого места, и они были забыты в том городе, где так поступали; это тоже суета. (11) Оттого, что свершается суд над злыми делами не скоро, сердца людские полны злых замыслов. (12) Потому что грешник сто раз делает зло, а (Б-г) долготерпелив к нему; однако, я знаю, что будет хорошо Б-гобоязненным, которые благоговеют перед Ним. (13) А нечестивцу не сдобровать, и, подобно тени, недолги его дни, потому что не страшится он Б-га. (14) Бывает на земле и такая тщета: есть праведники, которым воздается по делам нечестивых, и есть нечестивые, которым воздается по делам праведников; сказал я, что и это – суета. (15) И восхвалял я радость, ибо нет лучшего для человека, под солнцем, чем есть, и пить, и веселиться, и да последует это за трудами дней его жизни, которые дал ему Б-г под солнцем. (16) Когда склонил я сердце свое познать мудрость и понять то дело, которое творится на земле, так что ни днем, ни ночью во сне не смыкались очи; (17) То увидел я все дело Б-жье; но не сможет человек постигнуть дела, которые творятся под солнцем, сколько бы ни старался искать человек – не найдет. И даже если скажет мудрец, что знает, – не сможет всего постичь.

(1) Who is like a sage, and who understands the meaning of things? Man’s wisdom enlightens his face and softens the severity of his face. (2) I (advise): keep the king's command, as well as the word of the oath of God. (3) Do not rush to leave his face, do not be present at an evil deed, because everything that he wants will be done. (4) Where is the king’s word, there is power, and who will say to him: “what are you doing?” (5) He who observes the commandment of an evil deed does not know, and the heart of the wise knows time and law. (6) For every work has time and law, for the evil of man weighs on him. (7) For he does not know what else will be, and when it will be - who will tell him? (8) There is no man sovereign over the wind to hold the wind, and there is no power over the day of death, and there is no leave for war, and the wickedness of the wicked will not save. (9) I saw all this, taking to my heart all the things that are done under the sun, when a person rules over a person, to the detriment of him. (10) I also saw the wicked who were buried, and they came and went from the holy place, and they were forgotten in the city where they did this; it is also vanity. (11) Because judgment on evil deeds does not take place soon, human hearts are full of evil designs. (12) Because the sinner does evil a hundred times, and (Gd) is patient with him; however, I know that it will be well with the God-fearing who revere Him. (13) But the wicked cannot be spoiled, and, like a shadow, his days are short-lived, because he is not afraid of Gd. (14) There is such vanity on earth: there are righteous who are rewarded according to the works of the wicked, and there are wicked who are rewarded according to the works of the righteous; I said that this too is vanity. (15) And I praised joy, for there is no better thing for a man under the sun than to eat and drink and have fun, and may this follow the labors of the days of his life that Gd gave him under the sun. (16) When I inclined my heart to know wisdom and understand the work that is happening on earth, so that my eyes did not close day or night in a dream; (17) That I saw the whole business of God; but a person will not be able to comprehend the things that are happening under the sun, no matter how much a person tries to search, he will not find. And even if the sage says that he knows, he will not be able to comprehend everything.
