Золотится Рейна далекий отсвет,Над его мерцанием вечер тих.
Раньше я бросала рыцарям косы,
Но они бродили, не видя их.
Раньше я глядела из окон башни,
Звонок был мой голос, беспечен взгляд,
Но молчало эхо в тени горчащей,
И, роняя листья, молчал мой сад.
Я уже не помню, как это стало,
Берег мой тонет в закатной мгле.
Слишком много соли на землю упало
и цветы не стали расти в золе,
облетел жасмин под окном восточным,
Отзвенел вдали серебристый горн.
Я без сна лежала и слушала ночью
как врастает в камень корявый терн.
Хоровод водили во тьме планеты,
Своды опускались, давя на грудь,
Рыцари бродили, не видя света,
И терновник полз, преграждая путь.
Совы на воротах, луна над башней,
сумрачные тени, изнанка дня,
Колдовство мое становилось страшным,
Я же их просила спасти меня,
Но они не смели смотреть в глаза мне
И тогда, смеясь, я сказала «нет!»
И один упал с обрыва на камни,
А другой вонзил себе в грудь стилет,
Лишь один остался, самый упорный,
Ощупью блуждает у входа в склеп,
Что же он там ищет меж веток черных?
Больше ничего – он давно ослеп.
Сыплются осколки недоброго смеха,
Зеркало туманится, стонет рог,
Вот еще один в эти дебри заехал,
Потерял карту, коня и клинок.
Разбуди меня, я хочу проснуться,
Явь твоя ужасна, как страшен мой сон,
Где же ты теперь, о моя Рапунцель,
В зарослях терновника плачет он.

And one fell off a cliff on the rocks
And the other stuck a stiletto in his chest,

Groping at the entrance to the crypt,
