Артемий, сын благочестивых поселян Космы и Аполлинарии, родился в с. Верколе в Двинском округе, на р. Пинеге в 1532 г. Воспитанный в страхе Божием и благочестии христианском, он с пяти лет уже начал чуждаться свойственных детям привычек, не любил детских игр, был тих, кроток, богобоязнен, послушен родителям, прилежно помогая своему отцу в его крестьянских работах сколько мог по своему возрасту. Однажды в 13-летнем возрасте святой Артемий пошел с отцом на поле. Неожиданно сверкнула молния, ударил гром, и отрок пал мертвым, хотя молния и не коснулась его. Крестьяне сочли случившееся за гнев Божий, поэтому тело отрока оставили непогребенным в пустынном месте, в сосновом лесу. Произошло это 23 июня 1545 года. Спустя 28 лет по смерти праведного Артемия по необычному свету над лесом было обретено забытое всеми нетленное тело отрока. По разнесшейся о том молве собрались крестьяне, перенесли тело праведного Артемия и положили его на паперти церкви святителя Николая. Бог прославил мощи праведника чудесами, вследствие чего Новгородский митрополит Киприан в 1639 году послал из Великого Новгорода «свидетельствовати тутошними и окольными игумены и попы и дьяконы». Составленная опись исцелениям была доставлена митрополиту, который «после свидетельства» на другой год прислал «сотворенное празднество праведному Артемию полный праздник: стихиры и славники, и литею, и стиховну, и тропарь, и кондак, и икос, и светилен, и хвалитны и розпев под знаменем». По молитвам святого получали исцеление многие больные, в особенности страждущие глазными болезнями. Житель Холмогор Иларион потерял зрение и доходил до отчаяния. В день памяти святителя Николая Чудотворца праведный Артемий явился страдальцу с посохом в левой и с крестом в правой руке; осенив крестом больного, он сказал: «Встань, исцеляет тебя Христос рукою раба Своего Артемия: иди в Верколу, поклонись его гробу и расскажи обо всем священнику и крестьянам». После этого больной тотчас выздоровел. Благодарные почитатели святого отрока перенесли мощи с паперти храма в особый предел, устроенный в 1584 г. Мезенский воевода Афанасий Пашков в благодарность за исцеление своего сына построил храм во имя святого великомученика Артемия, небесного покровителя праведного отрока. В 1619 году мощи святого Артемия были освидетельствованы и перенесены (6 декабря) в этот храм. Через тридцать лет, когда храм сгорел, на месте вновь обретенных мощей в период правления царя Алексея Михайловича построили монастырь (1649 г.), в который перенесли мощи святого. По преданию, у святого Артемия была сестра — праведная Параскева Пириминская, прославившаяся чудотворениями. Память праведного Артемия совершается 23 июня/6 июля — в день преставления, также 20 октября/2 ноября — в день памяти тезоименитого святого великомученика Артемия.

In 1619, the relics of St. Artemy were examined and transferred (December 6) to this temple. Thirty years later, when the temple burned down, a monastery was built on the site of the newly found relics during the reign of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich (1649), into which the relics of the saint were transferred. According to legend, Saint Artemy had a sister - the righteous Paraskeva of Piriminskaya, famous for miracles. The memory of the righteous Artemy is performed on June 23 / July 6 - on the day of the repose, and October 20 / November 2 - on the day of remembrance of the namesake saint the great martyr Artemy.
