Котнер(делая знак ученикам и обращаясь к Вальтеру)
Чтоб в пеньи твёрдо нить держать,
законы наши надо вам знать!
Ученики, сняв со стены доску “Leges Tabulaturae”, держат её перед Котнером; тот читает.<.em>
Котнер
“Того лишь мастером должно звать,
кто правильно может песнь создать
из разных баров симметричных,
законных и обычных.
В каждом баре слиты два куплета, –
в них одна должна быть мелодия спета;
в куплете надо стихи вязать
и рифмой каждый стих кончать.
Куплетам вслед припев идёт
и рифмуется в свой черёд;
мелодия здесь уже не та,
что в двух куплетах была взята.
Из этих баров песнь слагают,
что песнью мастера считают;
кто вновь эту песнь споёт
и лишь четыре слога возьмёт –
не больше – из чужих стихов,
тот будет принят в цех мастеров”. –
(Он отдаёт доску ученикам; те снова вешают её на стену.)
Теперь садитесь на стул певцов!

(с лёгкой дрожью)

Вальтер подымается на возвышение и с неудовольствием садится на стул.

(в сторону)

(очень громко)
