Рядом стоит Молчаливый Соавтор, который с интересом наблюдает, что могло произойти с его пылесосом, за ту неделю, которую его не было дома. Гражданин предпочел не отвечать, лишь еще раз снял очки, потом еще раз одел, поправил керосиновую лампу перпендикулярно пылесосу и еще раз снял очки. Соавтор, уже недовольно, следит за происходящем. Его руки трясутся. Это ведь дорогая штука! Один раз по комнате прошелся и все! Вековая пыль ушла в вечность... Поправил рубашку. Улыбчивый Гражданин уже разобрал пылесос на запчасти и изучает по отдельности. Он вспотел, но вида не подает. Все хорошо! И сейчас все будет готово! Соавтор начинает ходить по лавке Улыбчивого, рассматривает антикварные жестянки, всяческие машинные масла, смазки, автомобильные запчасти, лишь изредка поглядывая на работу хозяина. Гражданин подходит к грязному умывальнику, испачканного какой-то черной консистенцией, умывает лицо и возвращается к работе. Он рассматривает фильтр, тщательно протирает его тряпкой, и подносит на свет. Откладывает. В его руках появляются всяческие насадки, устройства для регулирования расхода воздуха, всяческие сигнализаторы. Все это, Улыбчивый, поочередно протирает тряпкой, подносит к свету и откладывает. Соавтору кажется, что он уже знает состав пылесоса лучше, чем сам мастер. Он не выдерживает, с грохотом, кладет руки на стол Гражданина и злобно смотрит ему в глаза. Улыбчивый делает вид, якобы не заметил и продолжает работу. В ряд выставлены отполированные детальки, от большей к меньшей. Гражданин последний раз их оглядывает.
